Wales Free Agent Players Showcase Skills in Women's World Cup Qualifiers
Several Wales women's international football players, currently free agents, reportedly used their recent Women's World Cup qualifying matches to attract potential new clubs. Forwards Hannah Cain and Elise Hughes, along with defender Gemma Evans and forward Tianna Teisar, played key roles in Wales finishing top of their qualifying group amidst club uncertainty. Head coach Rhian Wilkinson highlighted their efforts, stating they 'put themselves in the shop window' as the team now advances to a crucial World Cup play-off semi-final in October.
Several Wales women's international footballers, currently without club contracts, reportedly utilized their recent Women's World Cup qualifying matches to showcase their abilities to potential suitors.
Players such as defender Gemma Evans and forwards Hannah Cain and Elise Hughes featured in matches against Montenegro and the Czech Republic. These appearances occurred as uncertainty surrounded their club futures.
While Evans is reportedly in line to join Newcastle United after departing Liverpool, the club futures for Cain and Hughes remain unconfirmed. Cain, 27, announced her departure from Leicester City following their relegation from the Women's Super League (WSL). Hughes, 25, also revealed she would be leaving Crystal Palace despite helping them achieve promotion to the WSL.
Wales head coach Rhian Wilkinson commented on the situation, stating, "I think they've done everything they can to put themselves in the shop window."
Cain contributed significantly, scoring her sixth goal in six World Cup qualifying games against Montenegro. Hughes and Cain collectively scored eight of Wales' 17 goals in their qualifying group.
Another Wales forward, 20-year-old Tianna Teisar, is also currently without a club. Bristol City Women announced in May that Teisar would be leaving the club this summer after a loan spell at Plymouth Argyle. Wilkinson acknowledged the challenge of players finding new clubs as part of the end-of-season process, expressing her desire to support them in securing beneficial situations.
Wales finished top of their Women's World Cup qualifying group and will return to action in October for a two-legged play-off semi-final. The draw for their opponents is scheduled for June 18, as they aim to reach their first Women's World Cup.
