World Cup Appearance Record Set to Be Broken in 2026
The longstanding record for most World Cup appearances, currently set at five tournaments, is expected to be surpassed in 2026. Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, are poised to play in their sixth World Cup, making them the first players ever to achieve this feat. This will break a record first established by Mexican legend Antonio Carbajal in 1966, and later equaled by players such as Germany's Lothar Matthäus and Mexico's Rafael Márquez.
A historic World Cup record is anticipated to be broken in 2026 when three prominent football players are expected to make their sixth tournament appearances. Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, alongside Argentinian forward Lionel Messi and Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, are set to surpass the current record of five World Cup appearances.
The initial benchmark of five World Cup appearances was first achieved by Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal. Nicknamed "Cinco Copas," Carbajal reached this milestone on July 19, 1966, when he played for Mexico against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium in London. He first participated in the 1950 World Cup and captained the national team in 1958 and 1962.
Carbajal's achievement was not matched for decades until German player Lothar Matthäus equaled the record in 1998 during a match against Yugoslavia. Matthäus was an outfield player, making his longevity particularly notable. Subsequently, several other players have also reached five World Cup appearances, including another Mexican, Rafael Márquez.
In 2026, Ochoa, Messi, and Ronaldo are expected to make history by participating in their sixth World Cup tournaments, thereby establishing a new record for most appearances.
According to Mexico News Daily, the record was once considered unbreakable.
