X Platform Deems Deepfake Abuse Against Chinese Activist Not a Breach of Rules
Apple Peiqing Ni, a 27-year-old Chinese activist residing in the UK and founder of the China Dissent Network, has been targeted by deepfake posts on the X platform. The posts, which surfaced after she shared content related to Tiananmen Square, portrayed her as a promiscuous drug addict. Despite advice from UK police to file a complaint, X informed Ni that the abusive content did not violate its platform rules.

A high-profile Chinese activist based in the UK, Apple Peiqing Ni, has been subjected to deepfake posts on X (formerly Twitter). The deepfake content portrayed Ni as a sexually promiscuous drug addict, appearing after she posted about Tiananmen Square.
Ni, 27, is the founder of the UK-based China Dissent Network. She suspects the targeting originates from a pro-regime bot. Following the abuse, UK police advised her to lodge a complaint with the US-headquartered social media platform.
