YouTube Reintroduces In-App Private Messaging Feature
YouTube is bringing back its in-app private messaging feature, expanding its availability to users aged 18 and older in the US and various global regions. This reintroduced functionality allows users to share videos and engage in direct conversations within the platform. The company had previously offered private messaging in 2017, which was discontinued two years later to prioritize public interactions, including features like Stories, which were also later removed in 2023.
YouTube is reintroducing an in-app private messaging feature, enabling users to share videos and conduct conversations directly within the platform. This new functionality is currently expanding to users in the United States and other international regions.
To access this messaging capability, users must be 18 years of age or older. Additionally, individuals wishing to chat must already be connected with their intended recipient on other established messaging platforms.
The reintroduction follows previous efforts by YouTube in this area. The platform had initially launched a private messaging service in 2017 but discontinued it in 2019. At the time, YouTube shifted its focus towards public conversation features, such as the Instagram-like Stories, which itself was later removed in 2023.
YouTube reportedly tested new methods for users to share videos and engage in discussions last year. The company's latest in-app messaging capabilities are stated to have begun testing in November 2025.
According to The Verge, this move aims to foster more direct communication among its user base.
