Anthropic Disables Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI Models Following US Commerce Department Directive
Anthropic has shut down access to its newly launched Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models. This action follows a directive from the US Commerce Department, which subjected the models to export controls, restricting their use outside the United States. The department's concerns are reportedly tied to national security, specifically reports of a "jailbreak" that could bypass safeguards in areas such as cybersecurity, chemistry, and biology.

Anthropic completely shut off access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models on Friday night, mere days after their initial launch.
The decision came after Anthropic received a directive from the US Commerce Department on Friday evening. This directive imposed export controls on the new models, thereby restricting their use to within the United States.
In a message posted Friday night, Anthropic stated that disabling Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers was the only immediate method to ensure compliance with the government order. Access to other models developed by Anthropic remains unaffected.
An administration official, cited in an Axios report, indicated that the administration is concerned by reports of a "jailbreak." This reported exploit allegedly bypasses broad classifier-based safeguards designed to block prompts related to cybersecurity, chemistry, and biology within the Fable 5 model.
The administration reportedly requested a pause in the release of these models to allow time for the "national security apparatus" to be "hardened" against such threats. Axios' source suggested this hardening process could be completed "in the next few weeks."
According to Ars Technica, these measures highlight a proactive approach to managing potential national security risks associated with advanced AI technologies.
