Android 17 Introduces Enhanced Parental Controls for Wider Device Access
Google is expanding Android's built-in parental controls, making them available on a wider range of devices updating to Android 17. These features allow parents to directly manage screen time, app access, content restrictions, and bedtime schedules from device settings, with more detailed options via Family Link. The company first implemented these controls on Pixel phones with the Android 16 QPR2 release. Google is also investing over $50 million in digital wellbeing initiatives to promote healthier technology habits among young people.

Android's integrated parental control features are set to expand, becoming available on devices that update to Android 17. This initiative aims to simplify the process for parents to manage their children's smartphone usage.
Parents will be able to manage various aspects of their children's device interaction directly from Android settings. These controls include managing screen time limits, restricting app access, setting content restrictions, and scheduling bedtimes. For more in-depth management capabilities, parents can utilize Google's Family Link service.
The rollout of these built-in parental controls began last year on Pixel phones, coinciding with the Android 16 QPR2 release. The upcoming expansion with Android 17 will bring these tools to a significantly larger number of Android devices.
Beyond these software updates, Google is also committing over $50 million to digital wellbeing initiatives. These efforts are designed to foster healthier technology habits and address issues such as social isolation among young users.
