Android 17 Unveils Foldable Gaming Mode with Virtual Gamepad
Android 17 introduces a new Foldable Gaming Mode designed for foldable devices, featuring a 50/50 split-screen layout. This configuration places the game on the top half of the inner display and a dynamic virtual gamepad on the bottom half, leveraging the device's folding crease for an optimized gaming experience. While the feature is enabled with Android 17, Google indicates it will become available in the coming months, alongside other enhancements like controller remapping.

Google has announced a new Foldable Gaming Mode as part of Android 17, specifically tailored for devices with flexible displays.
This mode utilizes a 50/50 layout, dedicating the top half of a foldable's inner display to the game while a virtual gamepad occupies the bottom half. This design aims to provide a large screen for gameplay and ample space for controls, with the division aligned above and below the folding crease or hinge.
Foldable Gaming Mode is enabled in Android 17, but Google has stated that it will be made available to users in the coming months. Android 17 also brings additional features, including controller remapping and more efficient memory cleanup.
Google has commenced the rollout of the stable build of Android 17 to supported Pixel devices. Other eligible smartphones and foldable devices are expected to receive the update throughout 2026.
According to Android Authority, the virtual gamepad component of this mode had been previously observed before its official announcement with the stable Android 17 release.
