Dead by Daylight's Increasing Violence Explained by Developers
Dead by Daylight, a decade-old horror game with 70 million players worldwide, has become increasingly graphic in its depictions of violence. Creative director Dave Richard stated this evolution is a conscious decision by the development team. The shift is attributed to pop culture's growing interest in the horror genre and a perceived decrease in audience sensitivity to graphic content over the years.

Dead by Daylight, a live-service horror game, is celebrating its tenth anniversary, having amassed a player base of 70 million worldwide. Over its lifespan, the game has undergone numerous changes, notably an increase in its depictions of violence.
According to Dave Richard, the game's creative director, this escalation in graphic content has been a deliberate decision by the development team. Richard noted that when Dead by Daylight was initially launched, the intention was to make it as accessible as possible, deliberately avoiding excessively violent or disgusting elements to attract a broad audience.
However, this approach has been revised over time. Richard explained that the team has been incrementally increasing the level of violence, or "raising the volume," each year. This change reflects a broader trend in pop culture, where horror is more widely embraced and audiences are perceived as less sensitive to graphic content than in previous years.
Richard cited the evolution of the game's "moris," or kill animations, as an example, highlighting the difference between earlier versions and current ones. He added that the increased presence of violence aligns with future plans for the game, including upcoming collaborations such as one with the Terrifier franchise, known for its explicit violence.
