Disney Clarifies "Super App" Strategy, Prioritizes Hulu Integration Over Park Tickets
Disney is not currently developing Disney+ into a "super app" that would serve as a central hub for park tickets, merchandise, or cruises. Adam Smith, chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, stated that there are no immediate plans to integrate these services into the streaming platform. Instead, the company's primary focus is on fully integrating Hulu into Disney+ to create a unified streaming experience.
Disney is not currently prioritizing the development of a "super app" that would combine its various businesses, such as park tickets and cruises, with its streaming service. Adam Smith, chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, clarified this stance during a recent town hall meeting. He indicated that there are no plans on the roadmap to integrate cruises or theme parks into Disney+.
This statement comes after a Bloomberg report last month suggested Disney was exploring the idea of turning Disney+ into a comprehensive hub for buying park tickets, merchandise, and playing games. The report noted that any such discussions were in early stages with no concrete development steps taken. Smith acknowledged that "super apps" have seen success in regions like Asia but described Disney as being "a ways off" from such an endeavor.
Instead, Disney's immediate strategic priority is the full integration of Hulu into Disney+. Smith emphasized the goal of establishing Disney+/Hulu as a premier streaming destination. Disney began incorporating select Hulu content into Disney+ in late 2023 and announced plans for full integration last summer. The company has also merged the ad servers for both platforms.
While Disney stated last month that there are "no current plans to sunset" the standalone Hulu app, an internal document obtained by Business Insider reportedly indicates that the Hulu tech stack and app will be decommissioned once all users have transitioned to Disney+. This integration, known internally as "Project Gemini," aligns with CEO Josh D'Amaro's "One Disney" initiative, which aims to foster greater collaboration across the company's teams.
According to Business Insider, executives like Smith and D'Amaro are focused on optimizing the user experience for their dedicated fan base by breaking down cultural barriers and ensuring fans receive the best of Disney services.
