FDA Approves First New Sunscreen Filter in Over Two Decades
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved bemotrizinol, also known by the brand name PARSOL®, marking the first new sunscreen filter authorized in the United States in more than 27 years. This decision, made on Tuesday, ends a long period without new sunscreen ingredient approvals within the country. While new to the U.S. market, bemotrizinol has been in international use for some time.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved bemotrizinol, sold under the brand name PARSOL®, as a new sunscreen filter. This marks a significant development as it is the first new sunscreen ingredient to receive FDA approval in over two decades, breaking a 27-year dry spell on Tuesday.
The approval has generated considerable excitement across the industry. While bemotrizinol represents a new addition to the U.S. market, it is already a well-established ingredient in sunscreen products internationally.
According to The Hill, the FDA's decision aims to help the U.S. catch up with other parts of the world regarding advanced sunscreen formulations.
