Malaysian authorities have arrested four people in the southern state of Johor following the circulation of online videos that purportedly show an Indonesian domestic worker being subjected to abuse. The footage reportedly depicted the helper being slapped, punched, and verbally abused within a private residence.
The arrested individuals include two sisters and their husbands, all aged between 30 and 34. They were apprehended at a house located in Taman Johor.
The incident has renewed scrutiny over the treatment and welfare of Indonesian domestic workers in Malaysia. There are approximately 60,000 Indonesian helpers officially registered to work in private homes across the country.
The viral videos have led to calls for intervention from the Indonesian government, based in Jakarta, to address the situation and ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.
