This project marks a departure from his signature fantasy worlds, introducing an evolved gameplay mechanic where players can control both a human protagonist and oversized robot companions. Game creator Fumito Ueda, renowned for titles such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, is developing his latest project, Gen Atlas. This game represents a significant transition from his established fantasy settings, moving into a sci-fi world inhabited by giant robots.
The initial inspiration for Gen Atlas stemmed from a particular visual image Ueda found compelling: a detached robot head being carried by the robot itself. This striking concept served as the foundation from which the game's broader world expanded.
Gen Atlas will introduce an evolution of the companion concept previously seen in The Last Guardian. In this new title, players will have the ability to control the oversized robot companions in addition to a human protagonist. The game is also expected to feature a higher degree of combat, incorporating varied weaponry, including energy weapons and orbital strikes, which marks a change from the sword-focused action of some of his earlier works.
Ueda acknowledged his fluctuating approach to combat intensity throughout his career. He noted that while Ico had minimal combat, Shadow of the Colossus featured more action. The Last Guardian then saw a reduction in combat, suggesting that Gen Atlas may return to a more action-oriented experience.
Despite the genre shift, Ueda affirmed that the core thematic elements of his games will remain consistent. These themes include the connection between humans and nature, the exploration of new worlds, and the formation of unexpected bonds through isolation. His overarching goal is to create memorable worlds that prompt players to reflect on their existence years after experiencing them.
Historically, Ueda's games have been set in quiet fantasy realms often characterized by ancient architecture. The move to a futuristic sci-fi setting required a reevaluation of how to convey the distinct atmosphere of his solitary landscapes.
