Melinda French Gates has offered advice to the new generation of millionaires and billionaires expected to emerge from upcoming IPOs, including SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic. She urged them to commit to giving away at least half of their newfound wealth.
SpaceX recently set a record by raising $75 billion at a $1.77 trillion valuation in its IPO, with OpenAI and Anthropic anticipated to follow. French Gates stated, "Commit now to giving at least half of it away," asserting that the ability to invest in such IPOs implies the capacity to donate half.
In 2010, French Gates co-founded the Giving Pledge, an initiative where the ultra-wealthy promise to donate the majority of their assets during their lifetimes or in their wills. She has personally pledged to distribute the majority of her resources within her lifetime. For years, her philanthropic efforts were largely channeled through the Gates Foundation, which she co-founded with Bill Gates, focusing on global health initiatives.
Currently, French Gates leads her own firm, Pivotal, which supports causes such as women's health, women's political empowerment, and caregiving. She recently announced a $215 million philanthropic commitment specifically for women's health, including women's midlife health and menopause. Her net worth is estimated at $19 billion by Bloomberg.
The Giving Pledge has garnered over 250 signatories, including co-founder Warren Buffett, Canva founders Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht, MacKenzie Scott, Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky, and Spanx founder Sara Blakely.
French Gates also highlighted that billionaires in the U.S. have benefited from the country's infrastructure, education, and healthcare systems. She advised against being flashy with wealth, noting that displaying riches does not benefit anyone, regardless of the amount.
According to Fortune, French Gates expressed admiration for philanthropists like MacKenzie Scott, known for her donations to historically Black colleges and universities, and Alice Walton, who is developing a new medical school.
