New York Knicks Win NBA Championship, Jalen Brunson Named Finals MVP
The New York Knicks have secured the NBA championship title, overcoming the San Antonio Spurs in game five of the 2026 NBA Finals. Point guard Jalen Brunson was a pivotal force in the victory, scoring 45 points in the decisive game and earning the NBA Finals MVP award. This win marks the first time the Knicks have hoisted the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy since 1973. Brunson attributed his success and readiness for the moment to the influence of his father, Rick Brunson.

The New York Knicks have won the NBA championship title, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in a 94-10 victory during game five of the 2026 NBA Finals. The team overcame a double-digit deficit to clinch the championship.
Jalen Brunson, the Knicks' point guard, was a central figure in the team's success, scoring 45 points in the championship game. His performance led to him being crowned the NBA Finals MVP. This achievement marks the first time since 1973 that the Knicks have won the NBA championship.
Brunson, 29, credited his determination and preparedness to his father, Rick Brunson. “When the opportunity came about to step into roles that were asked of me, I was ready for it,” Brunson told Men’s Journal. He added, “And I think watching my dad growing up and seeing how hard he worked to be in the position he was, it only pushed me to work harder once I got the opportunity.”
Rick Brunson also had a nine-season career in the NBA, playing for teams including the Knicks, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers. He was a Knicks standout during their 1999 NBA Finals appearance. After retiring as a player in 2007, Rick Brunson transitioned to coaching and returned to the Knicks as an assistant coach in 2022, the same year his son, Jalen, joined the team.
Jalen Brunson's journey to MVP follows a path of overcoming adversity. Drafted as the 33rd pick in the second round of the 2018 NBA draft, he steadily rose to become one of the league's top point guards during his four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging approximately 16 points per game. He stated, “I would say my mindset truly hasn’t changed. I continue to work hard every single step of the way from high school to college to here, and I don’t think my work ethic has really changed.”
The historic win was met with widespread celebration in New York City, with thousands of fans flooding the streets. A ticker-tape parade is scheduled to honor the team's achievement later this week.
According to Fortune, Brunson emphasized the importance of consistent effort, noting, “When you think people aren’t watching, people are watching, people are always watching.”
