Portugal is considered a serious contender to secure its first World Cup title, according to analysis from Opta Analyst. Despite never reaching the final, the team's best performance historically was a third-place finish in 1966. The Opta supercomputer currently estimates Portugal's chances of winning the tournament at 7.1%, placing them behind only Spain, France, England, and Argentina. This upcoming tournament marks Portugal's ninth overall World Cup appearance and their seventh consecutive participation.

Portugal is entering its ninth World Cup tournament, marking its seventh consecutive appearance since 2002. The team has a historical best performance of reaching the semi-finals in 1966, where they ultimately secured third place after losing to eventual winners England and then defeating the Soviet Union. Led by Eusébio during that campaign, Portugal has yet to reach a World Cup final.
Despite this history, the current squad is considered a serious contender for the championship. Cristiano Ronaldo, aged 41, is slated to appear in his sixth World Cup, drawing significant attention.
The Opta supercomputer provides a statistical outlook, giving Portugal a 7.1% chance of winning the tournament. This places them fifth among the predicted top contenders. Spain leads with a 16.0% chance, followed by France at 12.9%, England at 10.8%, and Argentina at 10.0%.
According to Guardian Football, Portugal has never reached the World Cup final.
