Stefan Bajcetic Aims for Preseason Fitness Ahead of Liverpool Midfield Shakeup
Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is reportedly targeting a return to fitness for the club's preseason in July, according to a BBC Sport report. The 21-year-old Spanish international has faced significant injury issues, preventing him from first-team appearances since May 2024 and leading to loan spells at Red Bull Salzburg and Las Palmas. His potential return comes as Liverpool undergoes a managerial change with new head coach Andoni Iraola, who plans to evaluate all players like new signings. With several key players absent due to the ongoing FIFA World Cup, Bajcetic may have an early opportunity to impress.
Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is reportedly working towards being fit for the club's preseason activities in July, according to a report from BBC Sport.
The 21-year-old Spanish international has had a career significantly impacted by various injury problems, last featuring for the Liverpool first team in May 2024. During the 2024/25 season, Bajcetic had loan stints at Red Bull Salzburg, under Pep Lijnders, and Spanish LaLiga side Las Palmas.
His potential return coincides with a period of change at Liverpool, which is anticipating a midfield shakeup this summer. New head coach Andoni Iraola has indicated he will assess every player as if they were a new signing during preseason, a promising outlook for individuals like Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott.
Bajcetic’s contract with Liverpool is set to run until 2027, and sporting director Richard Hughes will reportedly need to make a decision regarding his future. Former manager Jurgen Klopp previously praised Bajcetic, referring to him as a "super" player.
Adding to Bajcetic's opportunity is the reduced number of players expected at the start of preseason. Several Liverpool squad members will be participating in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in North America, allowing Bajcetic an early chance to establish himself in the midfield under Iraola before players like Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Ryan Gravenberch return to training.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, there is also speculation regarding other midfielders, including Alexis Mac Allister, whose camp has confirmed no talks for a new deal are underway ahead of his contract ending in 2028. Curtis Jones has also been the subject of transfer discussions with Inter Milan.
