Texas Lawyer Mark Lanier Used AI in Landmark Social Media Addiction Trial Against Meta
Trial lawyer Mark Lanier utilized an AI tool, Boodlebox, to assist in his successful social media addiction lawsuit against Meta and Google. Lanier reported that AI transformed his workflow, allowing his team to achieve significantly more work in limited time, contributing to the plaintiffs' $6 million award. The case, where a jury found the companies negligent for not warning about platform dangers, serves as a bellwether for numerous similar lawsuits.
Texas trial lawyer Mark Lanier leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) extensively during a landmark social media addiction trial against Meta and Google, which resulted in a $6 million judgment for the plaintiffs.
Lanier stated that AI has significantly transformed his legal workflow, comparing its efficiency to having "10 additional workers" who operate 24 hours a day. He specifically cited an AI tool named Boodlebox, for which he pays a six-figure annual fee for a custom license tailored to his needs.
He employed AI for various tasks, including preparing for cross-examinations, reviewing daily court transcripts, developing creative language for arguments, and evaluating jury notes during deliberations. Lanier emphasized that AI allowed his team to complete roughly 30 hours of work in 10 hours outside of court, crucial during the over month-long trial.
Boodlebox, described by Lanier as "Disney World compared to a swing set in the backyard," provides access to major AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. It also offers collaborative features, enabling Lanier and his team to work within the same digital workspace and incorporate his 42 years of legal experience into the AI's processing.
The jury in the case found Meta and Google negligent, concluding that the companies were aware their platforms were "dangerous" but failed to warn the plaintiff. This verdict against the tech giants is considered a bellwether for thousands of similar lawsuits filed against social media companies.
According to Business Insider, Lanier maintained that AI has been a "total game changer" for his practice.
