Tiler Peck Choreographs and Stars in Olivia Rodrigo's 'Stupid Song' Music Video
Principal dancer Tiler Peck of the New York City Ballet took on the dual role of choreographer and performer for Olivia Rodrigo's "Stupid Song" music video. The project brought Peck's classical ballet expertise to a pop music setting, featuring ballerinas following Rodrigo through New York's Upper West Side, engaging in both traditional ballet movements and a mosh pit. Directed by Mitch Ryan, the collaboration required a rapid turnaround, with Peck having approximately one week to cast dancers and choreograph the sequences.
Principal dancer Tiler Peck, a respected choreographer and longtime principal dancer with New York City Ballet, recently choreographed and starred in Olivia Rodrigo's "Stupid Song" music video. This role marks Peck's return to pop music video involvement, having previously made her music video debut at age eight in Fiona Apple’s "Paper Bag" video.
The "Stupid Song" video, directed by Mitch Ryan, depicts Olivia Rodrigo walking through New York's Upper West Side while accompanied by a troupe of ballerinas. These dancers perform pirouettes, cluster, and engage in a mosh pit sequence. Ryan, known for directing Rodrigo’s "Obsessed" visual among others, initially contacted Peck through her agent following a recommendation from video producer Cameron Sczempka.
Peck was approached for the project before she had heard the song, as efforts were made to prevent any leaks. Once she received the track, she had approximately one week to finalize casting and choreography. Dancers for the video were sourced from the American Ballet Theatre and Peck's colleagues at the New York City Ballet. The entire video shoot was completed in a single morning, running from 6 AM to 11 AM, to accommodate the dancers' 11:30 AM ballet rehearsals.
Ryan's initial vision for the video involved an ethereal portrayal of ballerinas that would transition into a scene where they became more unrestrained, culminating in the mosh pit. Peck met Olivia Rodrigo the day prior to the shoot to present her choreographed sequences. Peck also noted a sense of a "full circle" moment, recognizing that Fiona Apple, part of her first music video experience, is an inspiration for Rodrigo.
