AI Leaders Meet at G7 Amid US-EU Tech Dispute
CEOs from leading artificial intelligence companies, including Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, are attending a G7 lunch on Wednesday in Evian-les-Bains, France. The official agenda focuses on AI's role in economic growth and societal resilience for young people. However, the ongoing dispute between Anthropic and the White House regarding suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for non-US citizens is expected to be a central, unspoken topic.
Leaders from the world's prominent artificial intelligence firms, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, are convened at a CEO lunch today as part of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch is also among the attendees.
According to the official agenda, discussions during the two-and-a-half-hour lunch will center on how AI can stimulate economic growth and enhance societal resilience, particularly for younger generations.
However, a significant underlying issue, described as the "elephant in the room" by POLITICO and an industry representative, is Anthropic's recent dispute with the White House. This disagreement stems from Washington's decision to suspend access for non-US citizens, including those in the EU, to Anthropic's advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Anthropic subsequently confirmed it had cut off global access to these models.
This move by the US government has spurred calls for European nations to reduce their reliance on US artificial intelligence. Despite the tensions, European diplomats and officials at the G7 meeting express a readiness to collaborate with the US on mitigating AI's security risks, aiming for unity rather than further division.
European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier stated that the EU is prepared to engage with partners to address these security concerns. A European diplomat emphasized the importance of rebuilding confidence and establishing a circle of trust. Additionally, the EU's tech chief, Henna Virkkunen, noted that any contingency measures taken should not be discriminatory against partners.
Anthropic confirmed its CEO's attendance and announced upcoming meetings with the European Commission and EU cyber authorities in San Francisco on Thursday. These engagements are part of the company's ongoing dialogue with the EU and allied democracies regarding the cybersecurity implications and international collaboration opportunities for frontier AI.
