Amad Diallo Secures Late Victory for Ivory Coast Against Ecuador
Amad Diallo scored a 90th-minute goal, securing a 1-0 win for Ivory Coast over Ecuador in their opening World Cup clash in Philadelphia. The late strike by the Manchester United forward ended Ecuador's 19-game unbeaten streak. Ecuador hit the woodwork three times throughout the match, while Ivory Coast also rattled the crossbar before Diallo's decisive goal.
Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their World Cup opening match held in Philadelphia, thanks to a late goal from Amad Diallo. The Manchester United forward, who came on as a substitute, found the bottom corner of the net in the 90th minute, breaking a deadlock.
Ecuador had several opportunities to score, striking the woodwork three times during the match. John Yeboah hit the bar from the edge of the area, and Alan Minda also hit the woodwork in the first half. Enner Valencia also struck the outside of the post early in the second half. Ivory Coast also had a shot rattle the bar earlier in the game.
Nineteen-year-old Yan Diomande was noted for his lively play on Ivory Coast's right flank, while Nicholas Pepe and Elye Wahi also had chances. After the restart, Ivory Coast created more chances, with Diomande firing high and wide twice, and Wahi turning a cross onto the crossbar. Ecuador's Yahia Fofana saved a shot from Plata, and Joel Ordonez headed over from a free-kick.
Amad Diallo's winning goal came from the edge of the box after a strong run and cross from Wilfried Singo. Following the match, Amad stated, "We had to stay focused. We knew it was going to be a difficult match because we know the Ecuadorian players – they’re physically very strong. We came here to make history. We still have two more matches ahead of us, and we need to approach them with the same mentality and try to win them."
Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece commented on his side's "tremendous effort," adding, "The final result wasn’t what we wanted, but it’s just the beginning, and we have to keep working."
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, the goal by Amad Diallo condemned Ecuador to end their 19-game unbeaten streak.
