Marcus Rashford Set for Manchester United Return as Barcelona Purchase Option Expires
Marcus Rashford is expected to return to Manchester United following the expiration of Barcelona's €30 million purchase option on June 15. The English forward had been on a season-long loan with Barcelona for the 2025/26 season, where he reportedly had a career revival. However, Barcelona opted not to make the move permanent, leading Manchester United to open the door for his comeback.
Marcus Rashford's season-long loan spell at Barcelona from Manchester United, which began ahead of the 2025/26 season, is concluding as Barcelona chose not to activate a €30 million purchase option. The option expired on June 15.
Rashford reportedly had a successful period at Spotify Camp Nou, becoming an important player under Hansi Flick and contributing impressive goal numbers. Despite his reported desire to remain with the Catalan club and willingness to accept a significant pay cut, Barcelona did not proceed with a permanent transfer.
Manchester United is now reportedly open to welcoming Rashford back. The signing of Anthony Gordon by Barcelona has apparently shifted the Spanish club's priorities regarding the left-wing position. This, combined with other club needs, made Rashford's permanent acquisition harder to justify for Barcelona.
Manchester United's permanent manager, Michael Carrick, views the forward's potential return positively, especially after Rashford's performance in Barcelona demonstrated his high-level attacking capabilities. Carrick has reportedly already engaged in discussions with Rashford about staying at Old Trafford. Rashford remains under contract with Manchester United until 2028.
While other European clubs, such as Bayern Munich, had shown interest in Rashford, this interest has reportedly cooled. Barcelona's decision is attributed to strategic financial management and the prioritization of other squad areas, such as a center-forward, following Gordon's arrival.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, this outcome marks a disappointing end to a chapter Rashford reportedly wished to continue, but Barcelona appears ready to pursue a different direction.
