American Mother Learns Dutch to Connect Son with Belgian Heritage

An American woman, who met her Belgian husband on a dating app, embarked on a journey to learn Dutch, his native language. Initially, she did not anticipate learning Dutch, having previously studied Spanish and mistakenly assuming he spoke French.

The decision to learn Dutch became significant when her husband expressed his desire for their future children to speak his native language. Although Dutch is primarily spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium's Flanders region, and most speakers also know English, she recognized that her lack of proficiency would be a barrier for their child's cultural connection.

She began studying Dutch shortly after moving in with her now-husband, utilizing a language-learning app with his guidance on pronunciation and grammar. She noted differences between Dutch spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium, similar to variations between English in England and the United States, including differing pronunciations and word meanings.

Her efforts were met with encouragement from her husband's family and friends. Despite her basic proficiency during her first visit to Belgium, she was praised for her commitment to learning the language, which is uncommon for Americans. The couple now raises their two-year-old son in the United States, and they primarily speak Dutch to him at home.

This initiative has helped their son connect with his paternal culture. During a recent visit from Belgian relatives, the boy was able to play and communicate in Dutch with his two-year-old cousin who only speaks Dutch, reinforcing his connection to his heritage.
