Anthropic AI Models Taken Offline Due to Trump Administration Export Order
AI company Anthropic recently had to take its newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, offline following an order from the Trump administration. The directive mandated the company to restrict access for all foreign nationals, including those within the US and Anthropic's own employees. This action resulted in the models being inaccessible to everyone, marking what Anthropic believes is the first instance of US export controls being applied to an AI model in this manner.
Anthropic has spent the past week working to restore its newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after they were abruptly taken offline.
The disruption stemmed from an order issued by the Trump administration, which directed the company to sever access for all foreign nationals. This broad directive encompassed users located inside the United States as well as Anthropic's own employees, compelling the company to block access to both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for everyone.
Anthropic stated its belief that this marks the first time US export controls have been utilized to regulate access to an AI model in this specific way. While the Trump administration has not publicly detailed the legal grounds for its order, Anthropic indicated on its website that the government cited "national security authorities" to justify what it termed an "export control order."
According to The Verge, this situation has highlighted the complexities of applying existing regulatory frameworks to emerging artificial intelligence technologies.
