Anthropic Shuts Down AI Models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Following White House Order

AI developer Anthropic launched its new models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, on June 9th. At their release, Anthropic stated that Fable 5 possessed capabilities surpassing any model previously made generally available by the company. Claude Mythos 5 was described as having the same underlying model as Fable 5 but with certain safeguards removed.
On June 12th, Anthropic received a government order instructing it to block foreign access to both Fable 5 and Mythos 5. According to reports, this order came after conversations between Amazon and the White House, which were prompted by researchers allegedly discovering methods to utilize Fable 5 for cyberattacks.
In response to the government directive, Anthropic removed access to both models for all users. The company issued a statement acknowledging its compliance with the legal order. However, Anthropic also expressed its disagreement, arguing that the discovery of a "narrow potential jailbreak" should not warrant the recall of a commercial model that had been deployed to hundreds of millions of people.
