Autonomous Drone Test Reportedly Caused Casualties; Expert Warns of Civilian Harm
A senior figure in Ukraine's defense industry reportedly stated that a test involving fully autonomous drones occurred two years ago, resulting in confirmed casualties. These drones were designed to destroy anything within a designated area. Mariarosaria Taddeo, a Professor of Digital Ethics and Defence Technologies at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, warned that such systems are "fully indiscriminate" and lack the ability to differentiate between combatants and civilians, thereby endangering non-combatants.

A report indicates that a senior figure within the Ukrainian defense industry recently disclosed details about a test conducted two years ago. This test involved fully autonomous drones programmed to eliminate anything within a specified geographical zone.
The operation reportedly resulted in confirmed casualties. The revelation about this test was initially featured in a report published by New Scientist.
Responding to these developments, Mariarosaria Taddeo, a Professor of Digital Ethics and Defence Technologies at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, shared her concerns on FRANCE 24. Professor Taddeo emphasized that these types of systems are "fully indiscriminate."
She elaborated that these autonomous drones would not be capable of, nor designed to, distinguish between a combatant, a child, or an elderly person. This lack of discrimination, she warned, inevitably means that civilians will be placed "in harm's way."
According to France 24, the expert's comments highlight critical ethical considerations surrounding the deployment of fully autonomous weapon systems.
