China Calls for Greater Global South Representation at United Nations
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Wednesday that emerging markets face inadequate representation at the United Nations (UN), with the organization's authority increasingly challenged by global political and economic disputes. Speaking at a rare press briefing in Beijing, Wang Yi advocated for more voices from the Global South to be heard, emphasizing the equality of all nations regardless of size or strength. His comments accompanied the release of a white paper designed to make global governance more just and equitable, and he urged a firm commitment to a ceasefire in the Middle East.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted on Wednesday that emerging markets suffer from insufficient representation within the United Nations (UN). He noted that the UN's authority is increasingly being challenged by escalating political and economic disputes worldwide.
During a rare press briefing in Beijing, Wang Yi addressed the issue while presenting a white paper aimed at outlining methods to achieve more just and equitable global governance. He asserted that "Countries, whether large or small, strong or weak, developed or developing, are equal members of the international community," calling for an amplified presence of voices from the Global South.
Wang Yi described the current international landscape as characterized by rapidly succeeding new challenges that create intertwining global crises, stating, "The ship of civilisation has entered dangerous waters with hidden reefs and violent storms." He added that ongoing disputes reveal deep-seated conflicts, alongside the continuous emergence of "black swan and grey rhino events," referring to unexpected or ignored threats.
The Foreign Minister also urged a firm commitment to a ceasefire in the Middle East, appealing to all involved parties to work towards establishing a "sustainable security architecture in the region," as reported by the official Xinhua news agency.
The white paper's primary objective is to build international consensus for effective responses to global challenges. Wang Yi underscored that upholding the authority and status of the United Nations is fundamental to the initiative's success.
