Compulsion Games Seeks Collaborations After Becoming Independent from Xbox
Montreal-based developer Compulsion Games has announced its availability for partnerships and support studio work following its recent negotiation for independence from Xbox Game Studios. This move allowed the studio to avoid closure amidst recent mass layoffs by Xbox. The company conveyed its intentions via a LinkedIn post, emphasizing a return to its roots as an independent entity and a desire to collaborate across the games and entertainment industry.

Compulsion Games, a development studio based in Montreal, has declared its openness to working with other developers and publishers. The announcement comes after the studio successfully negotiated its independence from Xbox Game Studios, thereby avoiding closure during a period of widespread layoffs this month.
TheThe studio communicated its new direction through a LinkedIn post, stating, "With Compulsion Games returning to its roots as an independent developer, we are expanding opportunities to collaborate with studios across the games and entertainment industry." The post further invited potential partners to leverage the expertise of its team, known for titles such as "South of Midnight."
Compulsion Games also expressed its enthusiasm to "support the development of memorable experiences that engage and entertain players around the world." The studio's work includes the title "South of Midnight," which the original report noted as released in 2025 to critical acclaim, receiving an 8 out of 10 (Great) from IGN and a "Generally Favorable" rating on Metacritic.
Xbox initially acquired Compulsion Games in 2018, following the studio's development of titles like "We Happy Few" and "Contrast." The recent parting of ways with Compulsion Games, alongside other studios such as Double Fine, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, and Arkane, aligns with Xbox's broader strategy to concentrate efforts on its major franchises.
