DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has confirmed that an HBO series centered on Gorilla Grodd and Jimmy Olsen will commence filming later this year. Safran made the announcement during an interview with Brazilian content creator Good Nerd, where he was promoting the upcoming 'Supergirl' movie.
During the discussion, Safran provided insights into the future of the DC Universe (DCU). He mentioned plans to integrate Batman into the rebooted continuity through 'The Brave and the Bold' and acknowledged that a 'Justice League' movie is an eventual goal to unify the narrative. Other projects he referenced include the 'Supergirl' movie, the 'Lanterns' HBO series, a 'Clayface' project scheduled for this fall, 'Man of Tomorrow,' and 'Batman Part 2.'
The Gorilla Grodd/Jimmy Olsen project was previously reported as 'DC Crime.' This series is envisioned as a fictional true crime docuseries set within the DCU, with Jimmy Olsen acting as the presenter. Its inaugural season is expected to delve into the story of Gorilla Grodd. Skyler Gisondo portrayed Jimmy Olsen in last year’s 'Superman.'
Gorilla Grodd, a super-intelligent ape possessing super strength, speed, telepathy, and telekinesis, first appeared in 'The Flash #106' in May 1959. He was created by writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino. Grodd has been adapted in various media, including the animated film 'Batman Ninja,' the fighting game 'Injustice 2,' and live-action appearances in the Arrowverse's 'The Flash' and 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow.'
Regarding other DCU developments, Safran indicated that TV shows for 'Booster Gold' and 'Paradise Lost' are still active. However, 'The Authority' movie, initially announced as part of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters three years ago, has been set aside. Confirmed release dates currently exist for the 'Lanterns' HBO show, the 'Supergirl' and 'Clayface' movies, and 'Man of Tomorrow,' which is presently filming for a summer 2027 release.
