deadmau5 Adopts Fourth Cat, 'Cathulhu,' Following $30,000 Shelter Donation
Electronic artist deadmau5, born Joel Zimmerman, is expanding his family by adopting a fourth cat named Cathulhu. The adoption follows his recent $30,000 donation to the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton in Ontario, Canada, which helped rescue 27 felines in need of medical care. Cathulhu, a 3-year-old tabby, was among the cats deadmau5 assisted, and fans helped name the rescue animals through his Patreon.
Electronic music producer deadmau5, also known as Joel Zimmerman, announced on Instagram on Tuesday, June 16, that he is adopting a new cat, Cathulhu. This new addition will become the fourth feline member of his household, joining his current cats Dizzy, Dolly, and Peanut.
He visited the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton in Ontario, Canada, where he encountered Cathulhu, a 3-year-old tabby. The artist's adoption comes after he made a significant $30,000 donation to the shelter. This contribution met the shelter's request for funds after they made a plea on May 27 for assistance with 27 rescued felines requiring medical attention.
Following his donation, deadmau5 posted on his Patreon on June 7, asking fans to help name the nearly 30 cats from the rescue, sharing their pictures. Cathulhu, identified as No. 3, was suggested by followers due to its distinct whiskers and ears, which were compared to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu. Days later, deadmau5 confirmed the name in a separate Patreon post.
Deadmau5 has consistently expressed his preference for adopting animals from shelters. In a past interview with Billboard, he articulated the importance of adoption, noting the large number of cats removed from homes or found on the streets that need care. He stated his commitment to adopting over acquiring a "handcrafted rare cat as a showpiece," believing rescue animals understand they've been saved.
