Declan Rice Suffers 'Discomfort' During England's World Cup Win Over Croatia
England midfielder Declan Rice experienced "discomfort" in his right leg during the second half of England's opening World Cup group L victory against Croatia. Manager Thomas Tuchel substituted Rice as a precautionary measure, expressing confidence that the injury is not severe. England won the match 4-2, with goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford, but showed some defensive vulnerabilities.
England midfielder Declan Rice is facing minor injury concerns following the national team's 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening World Cup group match. Rice was substituted in the second half after clutching the top of his right leg and reporting "discomfort."
Manager Thomas Tuchel stated that Rice pointed to his lower back and upper hamstring. Tuchel opted to replace Rice with Morgan Rogers and adjust the midfield setup to protect the player, despite Rice's strong performance, which included assisting Harry Kane's opening goal with an outswinging corner.
"Declan had some unusual ball losses and I saw a bit of discomfort," Tuchel said. He added that he asked Rice, who "pointed directly to his lower back, upper hamstring, that he feels the discomfort." Tuchel clarified his decision: "I didn’t want to take any risk, so I decided to take Declan off – which I never wanted to do – but it was the moment to protect him." The manager expressed optimism, stating, "I hope it’s nothing more, and he just reassured me at the end: ‘It’s good, and I know the discomfort.’ We will take care of it, and this is nothing big to worry about."
England secured the win with two goals from Harry Kane and one each from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. Croatia managed to equalize twice in the first half before England pulled ahead decisively. England's next group stage match is scheduled against Ghana in Boston next Tuesday.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, this was the only concern on an otherwise successful night for England.
