Dexter and the Moonrocks Secure Second No. 1 on Alternative Airplay with ‘Freakin’ Out’
Dexter and the Moonrocks have achieved their second No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart with their song “Freakin’ Out,” topping the June 20-dated survey. This success follows their previous chart-topper, “Sad in Carolina,” which held the No. 1 spot for eight weeks in 2024-25. “Freakin’ Out” also saw a significant climb on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart and made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top 40.
Dexter and the Moonrocks have earned their second No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart with their song “Freakin’ Out.” The track climbed one spot to lead the June 20-dated survey. This achievement follows the Texas-based band’s previous No. 1, “Sad in Carolina,” which reigned for eight weeks in 2024-25 and was considered their breakout single.
The group has a consistent record, with all three of their top-charting singles reaching the top 10. In between their two chart-toppers, “Ritalin” peaked at No. 4 last June.
“Freakin’ Out” also made a notable jump on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, moving from No. 12 to No. 7. During the week ending June 11, the song garnered 3.1 million audience impressions, marking a 13% increase. This now stands as Dexter and the Moonrocks’ best-performing song on that particular tally, surpassing “Sad in Carolina,” which peaked at No. 9.
The single also marked the band's first appearance on the multimetric Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 91 in April. It subsequently reached the top 40, peaking at No. 33 in May, and currently holds the No. 40 position on the latest ranking. In the recent tracking week, “Freakin’ Out” accumulated 7.3 million chart-eligible streams and sold 1,000 units in the United States.
Released on March 11, “Freakin’ Out” gained widespread attention through short-form video platforms such as TikTok. The song is currently a standalone single and is one of three released by the band in 2026, alongside “Flavorless” and "12 Steps," the latter featuring a collaboration with Treaty Oak Revival. Since 2021, Dexter and the Moonrocks have released four EPs, with "Donkey Flats" being their most recent in 2025.
