DoD's Generative AI Platform Attracts 1.5 Million Daily Users
The Department of Defense's generative artificial intelligence platform, GenAI.mil, has seen a significant increase in daily users, now reaching 1.5 million. This surge comes just months after its launch in December 2025, when it had approximately 80,000 users. Pentagon leadership is encouraging widespread adoption of AI tools across its workforce to improve efficiency and assist with routine tasks.
The Department of Defense (DoD) is experiencing a rapid increase in the adoption of its enterprise generative artificial intelligence program, GenAI.mil, which now counts 1.5 million daily users among DoD personnel and employees.
Emil Michael, the Pentagon's chief technology officer and undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, disclosed this information at a recent Hudson Institute think tank event. He noted that when GenAI.mil was introduced in December 2025, only about 80,000 out of 3.5 million department workers were using the platform.
Michael attributed the substantial growth over the past six months to several factors. These include the launch of Google's Gemini on the DoD's unclassified networks, clearer directives from the Pentagon on appropriate AI usage, and employees' increasing exposure to AI tools outside of their professional lives.
DoD workers are leveraging AI for a variety of tasks, similar to applications in other sectors. Examples provided include drafting job descriptions and generating congressional reports, which can significantly reduce the time required for such administrative duties. The use of AI aims to free up personnel to focus on more complex tasks and reduce their cognitive load.
Beyond administrative functions, the Pentagon is also integrating AI into broader departmental operations and warfighting strategies. The department has requested billions of dollars for next-generation AI and computing in its fiscal 2027 budget. Officials have emphasized that AI integration in combat will include guardrails and ensure humans remain in control, even as the technology aids in processing data and making faster decisions crucial for future warfare.
According to Business Insider, the initial goal of GenAI.mil was to enhance worker efficiency by providing analysis and creative tools.
