Final Fantasy Resonance HD-2D Concept Originated Six to Seven Years Ago, Inspired by Classic FF Titles
The development concept for Final Fantasy Resonance, the first HD-2D Final Fantasy title, emerged approximately six to seven years ago. Producers Keisuke Nakashima and Hiroto Furuya revealed that the game draws significant inspiration from classic entries like Final Fantasy V and VI. Announced during a June 2026 Nintendo Direct, the game returns to turn-based combat and adapts the story of the now-inactive mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, aiming to recapture a traditional Final Fantasy experience.
Final Fantasy Resonance, announced during a June 2026 Nintendo Direct, marks the series' first venture into HD-2D graphics and a return to turn-based combat. The game adapts the narrative of the previously active mobile title, Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius.
Keisuke Nakashima, the game's producer, indicated that the initial concept for Final Fantasy Resonance began around six to seven years ago. Nakashima's motivation stemmed from a desire to revisit the classic Final Fantasy experience, particularly inspired by Final Fantasy V, his first game in the series. He noted a shift towards 3D graphics and action-based gameplay in more recent Final Fantasy titles, and sought to explore a style that emphasized exploration, such as traversing an overworld with airships, without relying heavily on player reflexes.
Director Hiroto Furuya also cited personal experiences with Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as key inspirations. Furuya highlighted the epic and expansive stories, the ability to play at one's own will, and the unique characters and party-building aspects of these earlier titles. He emphasized incorporating elements like airships and overworld exploration, echoing his enjoyment of these classic features. Furuya noted that he continues to replay Final Fantasy VI, demonstrating his deep appreciation for the series' heritage.
The game is set to launch on October 22.
