Firefighting Drones Undergo Testing Amid Persistent US Wildfire Threat
Autonomous drones capable of deploying water and fire retardants are being tested as a rapid-response solution for early wildfire suppression. These demonstrations aim to establish drones as a rapid-response tool for extinguishing wildfires early, addressing the nearly year-round wildfire risk faced by the United States, partly attributed to climate change.
While most drones are smaller than crewed aircraft and have shorter flight ranges, limiting their capacity to replace large airtankers for massive payloads to remote wildfires, their potential lies in quick intervention. Companies, fire agencies, and the $11 million XPRIZE competition are evaluating whether drones can assist firefighting crews in responding more swiftly to small blazes, preventing them from becoming more destructive.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) conducted a field test on July 15. This demonstration involved five autonomous drones that collectively deployed between 500 and 1,000 gallons of fire-suppressing foam. The event, held in California, was organized with the support of the nonprofit FireWERX and Seneca, a California-based company planning to make its drones commercially available starting in 2026.
