Google announced a lawsuit against an alleged Chinese cybercrime network identified as Outsider Enterprise. The tech company alleges that this network employs artificial intelligence (AI) in its operations to send fraudulent text messages.
The scam texts reportedly impersonate Google and various other brands, with the aim of tricking recipients into divulging their passwords and credit card information. Google claims that Outsider Enterprise has financially defrauded hundreds of thousands of victims, with estimated losses reaching millions of dollars.
According to Google, the cybercrime group deployed 9,000 fake websites and 1 million fraudulent web domains. In a two-week period, it allegedly sent 2.5 million texts to Android users. During a two-week span in May, Android users flagged 55,000 spam texts, indicating more than two complaints per minute.
In response, Google states it uses AI-powered tools to detect and alert users about suspicious calls and text messages, intercepting over 10 billion scam messages monthly. The company is collaborating with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon to block these fraudulent text messages and is coordinating with the FBI, which is reportedly taking unspecified law enforcement actions.
According to Slashdot, Google announced the lawsuit on Friday.
