Hong Kong Watchdog Urges Clarity on Hotel Refund and Booking Policies
Hong Kong's Consumer Council has called on hotels and online booking platforms to clearly outline their policies regarding booking changes and refunds. This urging comes after general complaints about such issues reached approximately 1,050 annually over the past three years. The council also reported receiving 3,346 complaints concerning lodgings in the city since 2023, with the majority, 2,670, originating from non-local travelers.

Hong Kong’s Consumer Council has pressed hotels and online booking platforms to establish and clearly communicate their policies for booking amendments and refunds. The consumer watchdog's call follows a trend of increasing concerns, noting that general complaints related to these issues have averaged up to 1,050 annually over the last three years.
Since 2023, the Consumer Council has registered a total of 3,346 complaints specifically concerning lodgings within Hong Kong. A significant portion of these complaints, totaling 2,670, originated from non-local travelers visiting the city.
Approximately 58% of the aforementioned complaints involved the termination or amendment of contracts. The council made its statement on Monday, emphasizing the need for greater transparency to protect consumers.
