Hull City Faces Potential Points Deduction Following Premier League Promotion
Hull City could face a points deduction upon their return to the Premier League, stemming from an estimated £6 million overspend on profit and sustainability (PSR) calculations. This financial predicament is reportedly due to the activation of promotion bonuses in players' contracts after their Championship play-off final victory. Owner Acun Ilicali has stated the club needs to sell players by July 1 to address the situation, which could otherwise result in a six-point penalty under EFL rules.
Hull City faces a potential points deduction in the Premier League following their promotion via the Championship play-offs. The club is reported to have an overspend of approximately £6 million on its profit and sustainability (PSR) calculation.
This overspend is attributed to the activation of promotion bonuses included in players’ contracts. Under EFL rules, such an infraction could lead to a six-point penalty for the club.
Hull City owner Acun Ilicali confirmed the club's financial situation during a Q&A session in early June. He stated that the club has overspent and needs to sell some players before July 1. Ilicali expressed confidence in managing the situation, noting that player values have increased since promotion to the Premier League.
The club's promotion to the top-flight, which offers substantial financial benefits, paradoxically triggered the financial issue. Had Hull City remained in the Championship, they would not have been at risk of exceeding the maximum allowed losses of £39 million over three seasons.
This situation echoes a precedent set by Leicester City, who also faced a points deduction. Hull City is expected to submit their accounts to the EFL by December 31, with any PSR charges likely to be issued in early 2027.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, the club had previously been restricted to free agents and loans in 2025/26 for making late transfer payments to other clubs, with key players like Joe Gelhardt, John Lundstram, and Lewis Koumas having already returned to their parent teams.
