Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was present at the United States vs. Paraguay World Cup opening match in Inglewood, California, on Friday, June 12. He attended the event alongside artist Katy Perry, who performed during the opening ceremony.
Trudeau's presence at the U.S. match meant he missed Canada's opening game against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which took place the day prior. On Saturday, June 13, Trudeau clarified his decision in a post on X, resharing a New York Times article that highlighted his absence from the Canadian match.
In his social media post, Trudeau wrote, "Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call," suggesting his attendance was to support Perry's performance. He added, "But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup," along with a Canadian flag emoji, indicating his continued support for Canada in the tournament.
Katy Perry performed her song "Wonder" from her album *143* live for the first time during the opening ceremony in Inglewood, joined by 10-year-old Norwegian singer Tius Luka. The lineup for the U.S. ceremony also featured artists such as LISA, Anitta, Tyla, Rema, Future, and Dan + Shay.
Meanwhile, the Canadian World Cup opening ceremony included performances by artists such as Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, and Michael Bublé, who helped kick off Team Canada's match. Perry and Trudeau have been dating since last summer and recently made their red carpet debut at the premiere of Perry's *Lifetimes Tour* concert film. During a Q&A at the screening, Perry referred to Trudeau as "the love of my life."
