Lawrence, Kansas, Embraces Algerian World Cup Team as Base Camp
The city of Lawrence, Kansas, with a population of approximately 100,000, has become the base camp for the Algerian national football team during the World Cup. Local officials and residents have undertaken extensive preparations to welcome the team, including holding 'Soccer 101' classes to educate locals on football rules and Algerian culture. The city has seen its streets adorned with Algerian national flags, transforming it into a temporary 'Little Algeria' and fostering a strong connection between the community and the visiting team.
Lawrence, Kansas, has become the adopted home for the Algerian national football team, which selected the city as its base camp for the World Cup tournament. The community, led by figures such as Ruth DeWitt, director of community relations at Explore Lawrence, began preparations in February to ensure a warm welcome for the team.
Local initiatives included 'Soccer 101' classes, which taught residents the rules of football, along with lessons about Algeria and its fan culture. Upon their arrival, hundreds of fans greeted the players, with even more attending a community training session at Rock Chalk Park where players interacted with local children.
The city's embrace extends to individual hospitality, with DeWitt hosting Wassini Souarit, an Algerian supporter from Minneapolis, during the tournament. Visitors from Algerian communities located approximately 40 miles away in neighboring Missouri also travel daily to Lawrence, hoping to see their national heroes.
Cultural expressions of support are visible throughout Lawrence. Art installations and fan gatherings have been organized, including events at Union Station in Kansas City. Earthworks artist Stan Herd created a large-scale installation of the Algerian flag at the University of Kansas Campus, visible from the campus roof. Herd noted that local restaurants are preparing halal food, further accommodating the team and its supporters.
Algeria is set to play its first match against Argentina at Kansas City Stadium, home of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, on Tuesday (02:00 BST Wednesday). The tournament is seen by many, including Herd, as an opportunity to foster unity and demonstrate Kansans' welcoming spirit to a global audience.
