Los Bukis' 'Tu Cárcel' Classic and Morat's 2026 Pop-Rock Version Compared
The timeless 1986 Los Bukis hit, "Tu Cárcel," originally penned by Marco Antonio Solís, has been revisited by the Colombian band Morat with a new pop-rock rendition. This latest version, released in 2026, became part of the soundtrack for the Disney+ and Hulu series "Dear Killer Nannies: Criado Por Sicarios" and achieved significant chart success. Billboard recently conducted a comparison of the two distinct versions, highlighting their individual characteristics and impact.
Forty years after its original release, Los Bukis' "Tu Cárcel," written by Marco Antonio Solís, continues to be a staple in Latin music. The 1986 track, a grupero ballad, was the lead single from the band's tenth studio album, "Me Volvi a Acordar de Ti." It peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart in July 1987. The song's narrative describes a woman too consumed by vanity to appreciate genuine love, a theme brought to life in its music video which depicted Solís grappling with betrayal and heartbreak.
In 2026, the Colombian band Morat, comprising Juan Pablo Villamil, Juan Pablo Isaza, Simón Vargas, and Martín Vargas, introduced their pop-rock interpretation of "Tu Cárcel." Produced by Nico Cotton, this contemporary version features an upbeat sound with prominent drums and electric guitars, while maintaining the original lyrical sentiment. Morat's rendition quickly gained traction, securing the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated June 20, and reaching No. 1 on Latin Pop Airplay and No. 3 on Hot Latin Pop Songs in June 2026.
Morat's take on the classic also serves as part of the soundtrack for the Disney+ and Hulu original series, "Dear Killer Nannies: Criado Por Sicarios," which explores the upbringing of Pablo Escobar. The accompanying music video for Morat's version showcases the band performing live to a sold-out audience. Over the years, "Tu Cárcel" has also seen covers by other artists, including a 2004 rock version by Los Enanitos Verdes and música Mexicana interpretations by Los Tigres del Norte and Yahritza y Su Esencia.
