Republican Representative Mike Collins has emerged victorious in the Georgia Senate runoff election, defeating Derek Dooley. This win positions Collins to challenge Democratic incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff in the upcoming general election in November.
Preliminary results from the Georgia Secretary of State's office indicated that Collins garnered approximately 55% of the vote. The Associated Press called the race for Collins just after 8:30 PM, with 52% of the vote counted. Following the announcement, Derek Dooley conceded to Collins.
Collins, a trucking company owner representing a district located between Atlanta and Augusta, ran his campaign as a loyalist to former President Trump, who had endorsed Collins after the May 19 primary. A central focus of Collins' campaign was immigration enforcement. In contrast, Georgia Governor Kemp was a fixture on Dooley's campaign trail.
Campaign finance records show that Collins raised $4.3 million up to the most recent disclosure deadline, according to Open Secrets. Senator Ossoff, by comparison, has raised over $57 million, building a significant campaign war chest.
In his victory speech on Tuesday night, Collins extended thanks to Dooley for running a "spirited campaign" and to Governor Kemp for his "leadership and his friendship over the years." Senator Ossoff reacted to Collins' win on X, where he criticized Collins as an "extremist" and attacked his voting record, specifically mentioning the Iran conflict.
The general election is set for November 3.
