Morat's Rendition of 'Tu Cárcel' Ascends to Billboard Latin Airplay No. 1
The Colombian band Morat has achieved its second No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart with its cover of Los Bukis’ 1986 classic, “Tu Cárcel.” The track climbed from No. 10 to the top spot on the chart dated June 20, also securing the No. 1 position on the Latin Pop Airplay and Hot Latin Pop Songs charts. This marks a significant moment as it is the first Spanish-language song from a Disney series or film to crown the Latin Airplay chart.
Bogotá, Colombia-based band Morat has achieved its second No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart with its rendition of Los Bukis’ 1986 classic, “Tu Cárcel.” The track surged from No. 10 to the top spot on the chart dated June 20, also claiming the No. 1 position on both the Latin Pop Airplay chart and the multimetric Hot Latin Pop Songs survey. Morat previously led the Latin Airplay chart for one week in August with “Me Toca a Mí,” featuring Camilo.
The original version of "Tu Cárcel," led by Marco Antonio Solís, reached No. 3 on the Hot Latin Songs chart in 1987 for Los Bukis. Over the years, other artists have covered the song, with Los Enanitos Verdes taking their version to No. 22 on Latin Pop Airplay in 2004, and Los Tigres del Norte's regional Mexican rendition, featuring Solís, reaching No. 30 on Regional Mexican Airplay in 2016. Hermanos Espinoza, Alta Consigna, and Yahritza y Su Esencia have also released regional Mexican covers.
Argentinian producer Nico Cotton produced Morat's version, noting the challenge of honoring the original while incorporating Morat's distinct sound. The song garnered 7.6 million audience impressions in the week ending June 11, contributing to its chart success. Morat shared their gratitude, calling "Tu Cárcel" a song that has been part of their lives.
Morat's "Tu Cárcel" is featured on the soundtrack for the Disney+ and Hulu original series, "Dear Killer Nannies: Criado Por Sicarios," which explores the upbringing of Pablo Escobar. Multi-award winner Julio Reyes Copello produced the soundtrack, released through his Arthouse label in partnership with Universal Music Latino/UMG. Reyes Copello expressed his pleasure in suggesting the song to Morat and the success of the new version.
The inclusion in a Disney+ and Hulu project holds significant meaning for Morat, who grew up as Disney fans. This achievement also marks a notable milestone as "Tu Cárcel" is the first Spanish-language charting song from a Disney film or series to top the Latin Airplay chart. Prior Disney-related Spanish-language songs, such as Sebastian Yatra’s “Dos Oruguitas” and Carlos Vives’ “Colombia, Mi Encanto” from *Encanto*, reached No. 2 and No. 6 respectively on Hot Latin Songs in 2022.
