New Bumblebee Goby Species Discovered on China's Hengqin Island
Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University and collaborating institutions have announced the discovery of a new bumblebee goby species, *Brachygobius jennie*, on Hengqin Island in China's Guangdong Province. This finding marks the first recorded presence of this fish genus in China, significantly expanding its known geographical distribution. Described as one of the smallest fishes globally, the discovery was detailed in a study published in *Zoosystematics and Evolution*. It extends the known range of these tiny coastal fishes northeastward into the subtropical mangrove wetlands of the Zhujiang River Estuary.

A new species of bumblebee goby, named *Brachygobius jennie*, has been discovered on Hengqin Island in Guangdong Province, China. This significant finding by researchers from Sun Yat-sen University and collaborating institutions marks the first recorded presence of this fish genus within China.
The newly identified species is recognized as one of the smallest fishes in the world. Its discovery expands the known geographical distribution of these small coastal fishes. The range now extends northeastward into the subtropical mangrove wetlands of the Zhujiang River Estuary.
The detailed description and findings of *Brachygobius jennie* were published in a study featured in the scientific journal *Zoosystematics and Evolution*.
According to Phys.org, this discovery highlights the biodiversity of China's coastal regions.
