Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently highlighted the necessity for society to evolve with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), advocating for a fuller embrace of the technology to improve people's lives. In an interview, Huang expressed optimism about AI's potential to rapidly transform society, fostering faster economic growth and enabling more scientific breakthroughs.
As the head of Nvidia, a company with an approximate market capitalization of $5 trillion, Huang addresses public concerns about AI's potential negative impacts, including job losses and threats to humanity. He stated that society needs to "create new social norms" around AI and encouraged everyone to "engage it."
Huang argued that the computing power generated by AI is vital for creating factory jobs, which have been promised for decades without sustained success. He acknowledged that AI has become a political flashpoint due to objections to new data centers and fears of layoffs, but he believes the U.S. can best win the global AI race by remaining open to competition.
He also contended that some government regulation and safety standards are necessary for AI, stressing that national security should be a priority for the technology. Huang drew a parallel between society's adaptation to AI and its historical adjustment to automobiles, suggesting that new norms will emerge.
Regarding proposals for the U.S. government to own shares in AI firms – an idea put forth by figures such as former President Donald Trump, Senator Bernie Sanders, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman – Huang expressed skepticism. He stated his belief that the country will broadly benefit from AI advancements without such measures.
According to Fortune, Huang shared personal details during the interview, including his enjoyment of the movie "Kingdom of Heaven."
