NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Calls for Wealth Tax After Elon Musk Achieves Trillionaire Status
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani advocated for higher taxes on wealthy individuals following Elon Musk's reported achievement of trillionaire status. Musk reached this financial milestone after SpaceX's Initial Public Offering (IPO), with the company's stock trading above its initial offering price. Mamdani referenced Musk's new wealth as a reason to implement policies targeting the rich, aligning with his progressive political platform.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly commented on Elon Musk's trillionaire status on Friday, stating it was a compelling reason to increase taxes on wealthy individuals.
Musk reportedly became the world's first trillionaire after SpaceX's historic IPO. The company's stock traded at $150 per share upon hitting the market, exceeding its initial offering price of $135. This financial gain further solidified Musk's position as the world's richest person, significantly outpacing Larry Page, whose net worth is now approximately a quarter of Musk's.
Mamdani's call for taxing the rich aligns with his established political agenda, as he has previously campaigned on such policies. New York City recently implemented a pied-à-terre tax on multimillion-dollar second homes, which reportedly faced opposition from some affluent residents. Musk has previously expressed opposition to Mamdani, having backed Governor Andrew Cuomo as a challenger in the New York mayoral race last year.
Despite their political differences, Mamdani has stated that he and Musk share a common goal of focusing on efficiency and eliminating waste. Last month, Mamdani announced the establishment of a Commission on Government Efficiency, which was described as New York City's response to the Musk-led DOGE office in the White House.
