Pakistan to Host US-Iran Peace Agreement Signing in Geneva, Says PM Shehbaz
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday that Pakistan will host the signing ceremony of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Geneva. This agreement aims to conclude a three-month conflict that began in late February, involving US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Pakistan has played a significant role in mediating the peace process, including brokering a ceasefire and hosting initial talks between the two sides in Islamabad in April.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Monday that an agreement reached between the United States and Iran, aimed at ending a three-month war, will have its signing ceremony hosted by Pakistan in Geneva.
The Prime Minister, addressing a National Assembly session after announcing the agreement past midnight on Monday, confirmed the ceremony is slated for Friday, June 19. Under this agreement, the US and Iran have established a framework designed to cease the conflict, lift the US blockade on Iran, and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The war initiated in late February with strikes on Iran by the US and Israel.
Throughout the conflict, Pakistan actively engaged in mediation efforts. The nation hosted the first round of direct US-Iran talks in Islamabad in April and subsequently brokered a ceasefire, which has remained in effect. Days prior to the latest announcement, Prime Minister Sharif declared on X that both sides had reached a “peace deal” following intensive discussions.
According to the Prime Minister, the agreement includes the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, encompassing Lebanon. He hailed the development as a “historic milestone” for global peace and a “diplomatic success,” commending the leadership of both the US and Iran for their patience during the negotiation process. He extended congratulations to the people of Pakistan, the international community, and members of the National Assembly, also acknowledging the guidance and contributions of various political leaders.
