Pakistan's Mediation Efforts Focused on Regional Stability, Official States
A senior security official in Pakistan stated that recent mediation efforts by the country's civilian and military leadership were aimed at securing regional stability and peace among Muslim countries, rather than pursuing narrow interests. The official, speaking at a background briefing, highlighted Pakistan's role, particularly that of Field Marshal Asim Munir, in averting a major regional conflict and contributing to peace between the US and Iran. The official also addressed Pakistan's response to alleged Indian violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and allegations of India attempting to incite unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
A senior security official in Pakistan clarified on Tuesday that the country's recent mediation efforts, led by both civilian and military leadership, were driven by a commitment to securing regional stability and peace among Muslim nations, rather than by self-serving interests.
The remarks were made during a background briefing for selected journalists, where the official discussed various issues, including Pakistan's role in fostering peace between the United States and Iran, and concerns arising from alleged Indian actions regarding the Indus basin.
According to the official, Pakistan, with particular emphasis on the involvement of Field Marshal Asim Munir, played a pivotal role in preventing a significant war that was reportedly planned and could have had severe regional consequences. The official described this outcome as a "war won… without actually being fought," attributing it to strategic planning and diplomatic efforts.
The official stressed the importance of "utmost confidentiality, responsibility, and caution" in the diplomatic process. Pakistan, acting as a "responsible mediator," would refrain from disclosing the specifics of any discussions or future steps to prevent speculation. Muslim-majority countries, especially Saudi Arabia, were also acknowledged for their "masterly leadership, restraint, and strategic patience" in helping avert a conflict that could have divided Muslim nations.
Regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, the official noted that Pakistan has mounted a "highly successful legal and diplomatic response" to alleged Indian violations. The official asserted that all necessary measures would be taken to protect Pakistan's interests in this regard.
Furthermore, the official alleged that India was attempting to incite unrest in AJK as a means to deflect attention from its perceived failures in "held Kashmir." The official affirmed that the twelve reserved seats, referencing those for Kashmiri refugees in the AJK Legislative Assembly, are integral to the Constitution and the Kashmiri people's right to self-determination, emphasizing that no group could impose its will through force.
According to Dawn Pakistan, these statements were published on June 17th, 2026.
