Protesters to Rally Against World Cup Sponsor Hyundai in Guadalajara
Protesters are scheduled to demonstrate against World Cup sponsor Hyundai in Guadalajara on Thursday, prior to a group A game between Mexico and South Korea. The rally aims to highlight Hyundai's business dealings with South American mining company Ternium. Environmental groups, including Mighty Earth, have criticized Hyundai for what they describe as a "dirty steel supply chain" due to its reliance on Ternium for iron ore. Ternium itself faces allegations regarding destructive environmental impact, corporate governance policies, and alleged links to the disappearance of two Mexican activists.

Protesters are preparing to rally against World Cup sponsor Hyundai in Guadalajara on Thursday. The demonstration is planned to take place before a group A football match between Mexico and South Korea.
The protest specifically targets Hyundai due to its ongoing business dealings with Ternium, a South American mining company. Activists intend to use the event to bring attention to the plight of Mexico’s "disappeared."
A 2025 report by the environmental organization Mighty Earth criticized Hyundai's involvement in what it labeled a "dirty steel supply chain." The report stated that the South Korean motor company is a major buyer of iron ore from Ternium, which is then used in steel production.
Ternium has faced repeated criticisms from various campaign groups regarding its destructive environmental impact and its corporate governance policies. Additionally, the mining company has been linked to alleged disappearances of two Mexican activists. According to The Guardian Sport, these concerns underscore the reasons for the planned protest against Hyundai.
