Roblox Implements Facial Age Estimation for User Verification
Roblox is enhancing its age verification processes with new facial age estimation technology, according to Eliza Jacobs, the company's vice president of safety product policy. Jacobs stated to NBC News that simply checking a box for age is no longer adequate. This new video selfie-based system aims to sort players into appropriate age brackets, with claims that its estimates are typically accurate within 1.4 years of a child's actual age.
Roblox is deploying new facial age estimation technology as part of its updated safety protocols. Eliza Jacobs, the company's vice president of safety product policy, emphasized to NBC News that traditional age verification methods, such as users declaring they are 13 or older, are "not enough anymore."
Jacobs expressed optimism that the video selfie age estimation system will "continue to get better" over time. The technology is designed to categorize players into specific age brackets.
During a demonstration organized by NBC News, a group of children attempted to bypass Roblox's new video selfie age check using a fake mustache but were unsuccessful. Jacobs stated that the facial age estimates typically achieve accuracy "within 1.4 years of a child's exact age."
Roblox initially announced its intention to utilize this video selfie age estimation technology in April, aiming to improve user categorization based on age.
