Shakira's 'Hips Don't Lie' Ft. Wyclef Jean Topped Billboard Hot 100 in 2006
In 2006, Shakira's collaboration with Wyclef Jean, "Hips Don't Lie," achieved the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reigning for two weeks. The song's success followed an initial struggle with her album, *Oral Fixation, Vol. 2*, and its lead single. Shakira convinced her record label, Sony, to rerelease the album with the new track, which she believed would be a "career changer."
Shakira's hit single "Hips Don't Lie," featuring Wyclef Jean, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2006, holding the top position for two weeks starting June 17, 2006. This marked the first and, to date, only Hot 100 No. 1 for both artists.
The song's path to success began after her 2005 English-language album, *Oral Fixation, Vol. 2*, faced a rocky start with its lead single, "Don't Bother," stalling at No. 42 on the chart. Instead of selecting another track from the existing album, Shakira returned to the studio and co-wrote "Hips Don't Lie" with Wyclef Jean.
Shakira described the song as "unconventional" and highlighted its embrace of her roots, including "cumbia and typical Colombian folkloric instrumentation." Confident in its potential, she persuaded the head of her record label, Sony, to recall and repackage the recently released albums to include the new song. The album, with "Hips Don't Lie" added, was rereleased on March 28, 2006.
Following its rerelease, *Oral Fixation, Vol. 2* jumped from No. 98 to No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart dated April 15, 2006. "Hips Don't Lie" also made a significant impact on the Hot Latin Songs chart, commanding it for eight weeks and contributing to Shakira's ranking among Billboard's Top Latin Artists of the 21st Century.
The single has accumulated 2.1 billion in radio airplay audience, 1.4 billion official streams, and 4 million in digital sales within the United States. Shakira commented in 2016 that the success of "Hips Don't Lie" served as "validation that I didn’t have to sacrifice any part of what makes me different to connect with a global audience."
According to Billboard, Shakira also received the inaugural Billboard Global Touring Icon Award in 2025 for her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.
